Illinois Cannabis Purchase Limits Explained (2026)

Stashouse Published 2 min read

“How much can I actually buy?” is one of the most-asked questions at the register. Here are Illinois’ adult-use purchase and possession limits in plain English — for residents and for visitors — plus the practical stuff (ID, payment, taxes) that goes with them. General information, not legal advice.

The Limits at a Glance

Product type Illinois residents (21+) Out-of-state visitors (21+)
Cannabis flower 30 grams 15 grams
Concentrates 5 grams 2.5 grams
THC in infused products (edibles, etc.) 500 mg 250 mg

Visitor limits are exactly half the resident limits, across the board. These caps cover what you can possess at one time — and dispensaries apply them per transaction.

What Counts as What?

  • Flower — bud, pre-rolls, and shake all count toward the 30g (or 15g) flower cap by weight.
  • Concentrates — vape carts, dabs, live resin: counted by concentrate weight.
  • Infused products — gummies, chocolates, beverages, tinctures: counted by total milligrams of THC, not package weight. A 100 mg tin uses 100 mg of your 500 mg cap.

The Practical Checklist

  • ID, every time: valid government-issued photo ID showing 21+.
  • Payment: cash or debit (ATMs in-store). No credit cards at any Illinois dispensary.
  • Taxes: Illinois applies state excise tax (which varies by product type and potency) plus standard sales and local taxes — expect the register total to be higher than the shelf price. Exact rates show on your receipt.
  • Keep it in Illinois: carrying cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law, full stop — including into Iowa and Missouri. Iowa visitors: details in our Iowa-resident guide.
  • Consumption: private property only, with the owner’s permission. Never in public, never in a vehicle, never before driving.

Medical Patients

Illinois’ medical program has separate allotments and lower taxes for registered patients. Stashouse is an adult-use dispensary; medical patients are welcome to shop our adult-use menu under the limits above.

FAQ

Are the limits per day or per visit?

The legal caps are possession limits — what you can have on you at one time. Dispensaries enforce them per transaction.

Do pre-rolls count as flower?

Yes — pre-rolls count toward the flower cap by weight.

Can I combine the categories in one purchase?

Yes. The caps are per category: e.g., a resident can buy flower, concentrates, and edibles in the same visit, as long as each category stays under its own limit.

Why is my receipt higher than the menu price?

Illinois cannabis excise tax plus sales and local taxes are added at checkout. The live menu shows shelf prices; taxes appear on the receipt.
